Overview[]

YandereDev's Greatest Nightmare is a small, simple platform game that revolves around shooting running obstacles with a gun while collecting plain white panties in the run. The goal is to defeat the boss once the player reaches a score of 250. The number is said to be changed according to the Manual .txt file, but the project has since been discontinued. YandereDev describes this game as "simple, but charming".[1]

Gameplay[]

Multiple fade-in screens will greet the player, all can be skipped by clicking "E". which will respectively start as a warning screen, a notice that the game is not in development anymore, another notice as to which rights the game belongs to, and menu to if the player would like to listen to music while playing the game. The player will then see a screen which has a menu on the left, and a psychotic-looking Amai Odayaka on the right, with a "rock on" pose, and wearing her cupcake pajamas covered in blood. The menu is in dark gradient red, with four options.

If the player decides to start the game, a loading screen with YandereDev in a fighting stance and Amai in the same pose and appearance will appear for a few seconds. YandereDev (voiced by TunnelBerg) will say a small quote that the situation he is in is a real nightmare. Evidenced by the setting being in an unknown Akademi hallway, which has an eerie look. The lightening in this game is dim, as black commonly surrounds the frame of the screen. The entire game also has a hint of static texture. The protagonist, in a simple white t-shirt, dull blue pants, barefooted, and welding a gun, is seen running through the endless hallway. Three red hearts can be seen on the bottom left, and two stats on the opposite side. The score is counted based on how many running Midoris and Itachis The protagonist shoots with his gun, and the heart stats have the player's score and how many panties they collect. For every 10 panties they collect, they will regain three hearts back, especially if their hearts are below 3. If the player collects 10 panties with three full hearts, the nearby Midoris will die.

In the normal run, the protagonist has to collect a score of 250 from shooting the running NPCs to unlock the boss level, which is Amai with a psychotic expression and appearance. When she is unlocked, the protagonist will say a small quote regarding it and start walking backward. The player will need to shoot Amai exactly 25 times to fully defeat her. During this stage, Amai will start randomly moving side-by-side and attempt to throw multiple frying pans at the protagonist to damage him. The player has to juggle between stopping Amai with the gun, dodging her attacks, dodge the running NPCs, and collect the panties running backward. If Amai successfully damages all of the hearts, the game will restart after the protagonist groans in pain.

If Amai is successfully defeated, she will say a small quote that is similar to her Rival Introduction video, while the camera comes closer to her bloody model for 14 seconds. A small screen will thank the player for playing the game, and a credits cutscene in a form of a slideshow will immediately appear after.

The player can adjust the game difficulty by punching in some cheat codes in the Extras menu. For example, Lovesick will amp the game difficulty, while Bijuu would change the protagonist into a completely different character. They can also be disabled by typing them and punching them again, and multiple codes (as many as all five of them) can be enabled at the same time. Some codes may have to be re-enabled once the player completes a run.

  • According to the manual file, the game can be fully played with a controller, however, some aspects of the game (such as punching in a code or trying to exit a menu) require a keyboard.
